SHEN Baiyong
Languages:
International leading expert in pancreatic tumor surgery and robotic surgery
Prof. Shen Baiyong, born October 1966, is a Chief Physician, Grade-II Professor, and Doctoral Supervisor. He currently serves as Vice President of Ruijin Hospital (SJTU School of Medicine), Deputy Director of Shanghai Digestive Surgery Institute, Director of SJTU Pancreatic Disease Institute, and Executive Dean of the Translational Medicine Research Institute.
He received his medical degree from Shanghai Second Medical University (French Class) in 1991, trained in France at Grenoble University Hospital and Paris VII University BEAUJON Hospital (1994–1999), earned his Master’s from West China Medical University in 2002, and his PhD from SJTU in 2006.
With over 30 years of dedicated work in pancreatic cancer, he established China’s first comprehensive pancreatic disease diagnostic and treatment center in 2006. He has treated over 6,000 pancreatic cancer patients, achieving internationally leading outcomes.
He pioneered a complete minimally invasive pancreatic surgery system, completing nearly 5,000 robotic pancreatic surgeries — the largest case volume worldwide. He invented the “Shen’s Anastomosis” technique, reducing pancreatic fistula rate from 16% to 2.3%.
He was elected President of the International Clinical Robotic Surgery Association (CRSA), awarded the French Legion of Honour in 2022, and elected Foreign Corresponding Member of the French National Academy of Medicine in 2023.

Focus on Disease Treatment & Therapeutic Methods
| Disease | Treatment Method | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Pancreatic Cancer (Early Stage) | Extended 5-group lymph node dissection + Radical surgery | 5-year survival 27.5% post-radical surgery |
| Pancreatic Cancer (Intermediate) | Surgery-first strategy + Combined vascular resection & reconstruction | Resection rate 77.8%, R0 resection rate 82.5% |
| Pancreatic Cancer (Advanced) | Combined organ resection + Multidisciplinary treatment | Median survival nearly doubled; 1-year survival 36.11% |
| Pancreatic Tumors (Minimally Invasive) | Da Vinci robotic surgery / Laparoscopic surgery | World's largest case volume (~5000); 2 novel robotic procedures pioneered |
| Complex Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Diseases | Minimally invasive surgery + Liver transplant + Lifecycle management | Zero perioperative mortality; internationally leading outcomes |
Target Patient Populations
- Confirmed pancreatic cancer patients needing surgical assessment.
- Patients with complex tumor-vascular relationships (portal vein, mesenteric vessels).
- Cases deemed surgically difficult or with conflicting opinions from multiple hospitals.
- Patients seeking robotic-assisted minimally invasive pancreatic surgery evaluation.
- Patients requiring re-assessment after neoadjuvant therapy.
- Elderly or complex patients needing multidisciplinary comprehensive plans.
