Boao Completes First Stem Cell Treatment for Foreign Patient with Diabetes

A new milestonein international medical cooperation has been achieved in China’s medical field— Ciming Boao International Hospital, located in the Boao Lecheng InternationalMedical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan, has successfully performed stem celltreatment on Mr. Suppiah, a Canadian patient with type 2 diabetes. This isChina’s first clinical translational stem cell treatment for internationaldiabetic patients.

Mr. Suppiah hasbeen suffering from type 2 diabetes for many years and has long receivedtraditional treatments such as oral hypoglycemic drugs and insulin injectionsin Canada. However, he has been unable to effectively control blood sugarfluctuations and insulin resistance, and is also accompanied by earlycomplications such as numbness of limbs with poor improvement in isletfunction. After extensive research, he chose to come to China for cutting-edgetreatment.

This treatmentadopts the human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell therapy program. Its coreprinciple is to infuse compliantly prepared mesenchymal stem cells to repairdamaged islet β cells, regulate inflammatory responses, improve insulinresistance, and regulate blood glucose metabolism from the root, which isdifferent from the “passive blood sugar control” of traditionaltreatments.

The core difference between the two lies in: traditional treatmentcan only inhibit blood sugar, relieve symptoms, cannot reverse islet damage, and patients need to rely on drugs or insulin for a long time; while stem celltreatment achieves “active repair”, which can improve islet function, reduce drug dependence, and alleviate early complications, providing a new pathfor patients with refractory type 2 diabetes.
