4-year-old Mariam from Uzbekistan experienced sudden right limb seizures in mid to late March 2024. After the seizures stopped, she still had limited mobility. The local hospital diagnosed her with moyamoya disease(MMD), a chronic progressive cerebrovascular condition characterized by narrowing or occlusion of the arteries at the bifurcation of the bilateral internal carotid arteries and around the circle of Willis. This condition can manifest as cerebral infarction or hemorrhage, and the most effective treatment is surgery.

After consulting several neurosurgeons in Uzbekistan, Turkey, and Russia, her parents found that the number of moyamoya cases they had treated was extremely limited. Their clinical experience and understanding of the disease were insufficient. Through further inquiries, the parents learned that Shanghai’s Fudan University Children’s Hospital has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating moyamoya disease, performing nearly a hundred pediatric moyamoya surgeries each year.

On April 17, 2024, Mariam and her family arrived at the hospital in Shanghai. Mariam was diagnosed with bilateral cerebral artery lesions, requiring two craniotomies. On April 23, Professor Xu Bin and Professor Li Hao’s team performed the first craniotomy on Mariam. On June 4, the treatment team successfully conducted the second craniotomy, “seeding” blood vessels from the dura mater and other areas into the cerebral cortex to improve blood circulation in the brain. After a smooth recovery, Mariam was discharged on June 17 and set off to return to Uzbekistan with her family.

It is reported that through treatment, the clinical cure rate for pediatric moyamoya disease exceeds 80%, and over 90% of children experience a reduction in clinical symptoms, allowing them to return to normal lives in the future. Hospitals in China have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating pediatric hemorrhagic or ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. They also possess comprehensive surgical platforms that enable the simultaneous application of interventional and open surgeries to treat complex cerebrovascular malformations in children.
