On October 25, 2024,Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital in China completed the world-firstclinical use of universal CAR-T   cell therapy in a patient with advancedpancreatic cancer. This milestone marks a new frontier in treating advancedpancreatic cancer patients.

CAR-T therapy is a novelprecision-targeted cancer treatment. It involves extracting immune T-cells froma patient, modifying them in vitro, and reinfusing them to help identify andattack specific cancer cells. However, most existing CAR-T therapiesare autologous (using the patient’s own cells), requiring complexindividualized production. Some patients cannot generate sufficienthigh-quality T-cells, limiting broader application.

In contrast, universal(or allogeneic) CAR-T therapy uses T-cells from healthy donors. Oncecultivated, these cells can treat multiple patients, reducing costs andenabling on-demand use. This approach promises breakthroughs in cancerimmunotherapy and is emerging as a pivotal direction in cell therapy.

While CAR-T has shownremarkable success in blood cancers (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma), itsefficacy in solid tumors remains under exploration. To address this, TianjinMedical University Cancer Hospital initiated the “CHT102 Allogeneic CAR-TClinical Trial for Advanced MSLN-Positive Solid Tumors.” This single-arm,open-label study evaluates the safety and efficacy of universal CAR-T therapyin patients with advanced solid tumors expressing the MSLN target—includingpancreatic, ovarian, and bile duct cancers. The trial aims to overcome currenttreatment barriers and make cutting-edge therapies affordable, accessible, and effective for more patients.

On October 25, theresearch team completed safety monitoring and biological sample collection. Keysteps—drug delivery, cell transport, cell revival, infusion, PK/PD bloodsampling, and vital signs monitoring—were executed seamlessly by an experiencedmedical team. The patient remains in stable condition, and the trial advancessteadily, offering new therapeutic hope to pancreatic cancer patientsworldwide.

In today’s medicalfield, cell therapy is emerging as a brilliant new star. China is risingrapidly in this cutting-edge field, demonstrating strong capabilities andenormous potential.

At present, China has 6commercialized CAR-T products on the market, covering CD19 and BCMA targets.Their indications include various hematological malignancies such as B-celllymphoma, multiple myeloma, mantle cell lymphoma, and follicular lymphoma. Today,China has achieved a globally leading position in the field of cell therapy, and a growing number of international patients, especially those from developedcountries in Europe and America, have chosen to come to China for advancedtherapies such as stem cell therapy and CAR-T cell therapy.
